Turnbuckle End Fittings Explained: Eye-Eye, Hook-Eye and Jaw-Jaw

Jaw-jaw open-body turnbuckle with pinned end fittings

When sourcing turnbuckles, the end fittings are as important as the nominal size. An eye, an open hook and a pinned jaw connect to different mating hardware. Choosing the wrong end arrangement can leave a distributor with stock that does not fit the customer's installation, even when the body size looks correct.

Y.F METAL lists eye-eye, hook-eye and jaw-jaw open-body turnbuckles. This guide compares the connection styles and shows what to include in a wholesale or project RFQ.

Eye-eye turnbuckles: closed eyes at both ends

An eye-eye turnbuckle has a closed eye on each threaded end. The buyer must specify how each eye will connect to the rest of the assembly, such as the required mating pin or shackle, and confirm the eye dimensions against that hardware. A closed eye cannot simply be placed over a fixed attachment without opening the mating connection.

Our catalogue includes an American-style 1/4-inch eye-eye model and a JIS-style 1/4-inch eye-eye model. Their listed working load limits differ, so the shared nominal size is not enough to treat them as equivalent. Compare the exact product drawing and rating for the model being quoted.

Hook-eye turnbuckles: an open hook on one side

A hook-eye turnbuckle combines a closed eye with an open hook. The hook end may suit an assembly that needs a removable connection, provided the hook shape, engagement and intended use are approved for that system. The open end should never be selected from a product photo alone: ask for the hook opening and the dimensions of the point it will engage.

For example, the site lists American-style and JIS-style 5/8-inch hook-eye products. The published ratings are model-specific. Confirm which design, finish and working load requirement your customer actually needs.

Jaw-jaw turnbuckles: pinned connections at both ends

A jaw-jaw turnbuckle has a forked jaw and a removable pin at each end. It is useful when the mating connection is designed to sit between the jaw plates. For a correct fit, the RFQ should state the jaw gap, pin diameter and mating-plate thickness, as well as the closed and extended lengths.

Y.F METAL's dock jaw-jaw range is listed separately from the lighter eye-eye and hook-eye products. Its pages use SWL terminology and give model-specific dimensions. Do not substitute one style or rating for another based only on a similar appearance or nominal size.

What matters beyond the end fitting?

End fitting shape determines how the turnbuckle connects, but the rest of the specification determines whether that exact model fits the job. Before ordering, confirm:

A style name such as “American” or “JIS” is not a substitute for an approved drawing, applicable standard requirements or project acceptance. For critical use, the complete assembly should be reviewed by the responsible engineer. Follow the product's installation instructions and avoid assuming a turnbuckle is approved for lifting or side loading.

A practical turnbuckle RFQ for distributors

To make quotations comparable, send one line per product with the end fitting combination, nominal size, drawing or reference model, required load rating, closed length, take-up, connection dimensions, finish, quantity per size, packaging and destination. If the buyer needs test documents or specific marks, include those requirements at the start so feasibility, cost and lead time can be confirmed for that order.
