1. Product Overview

This American high-strength 3/8" wire rope clip (commonly called wire rope clamp, U-bolt clip, or malleable iron / forged steel rope clip) is an industrial-grade fastening solution. It is designed for wire rope with a nominal diameter of 3/8 inch (approx. 9.5 mm / 10 mm) and serves as a key mechanical fastener for forming rope eyes, connecting two wire ropes or securing tensioned cable systems.

The assembly consists of a heavy-duty saddle, a precision-thread U-bolt and two hex nuts. With excellent mechanical clamping force, industrial galvanizing and a special protective coating, it keeps wire rope securely locked under load without slippage.

2. Key Features & Design Highlights

  • American standard design with precise anti-slip fit: The saddle groove is engineered to match 3/8" (approx. 10 mm) wire rope. Built-in serrated ridges bite into the rope for maximum friction and prevent sliding under load.
  • Heavy-duty structure and durable materials: The heat-treated U-bolt delivers high tensile strength and toughness. Threads are deep and smooth—even under high tightening torque, the bolt resists stripping and permanent deformation.
  • Dual industrial corrosion protection: The saddle is electro-galvanized or hot-dip galvanized for long-term rust protection. The U-bolt carries a red protective coating that improves resistance to outdoor damp conditions and salt spray while making size identification easier in multi-spec assemblies.
  • Reusable mechanical fastener: Unlike swaged aluminum ferrules or spliced rope connections, this U-bolt wire rope clip is fully removable and reusable, allowing field operators to adjust eye size or system tension at any time.

3. Primary Applications

This 3/8" American wire rope clip is ideal for securing medium to heavy wire rope systems across many industries:

  • Wire rope eye terminations: Used with thimbles to quickly form a secure end eye on 3/8" (10 mm) wire rope.
  • Construction and outdoor shade tension: Fixing large shade sails, tensile fabric structures and suspension cables for heavy outdoor signs or light boxes.
  • Power, telecom and tower guy wires: Securing and tensioning corner guy ropes on heavy utility poles, temporary masts and communication towers.
  • Agricultural greenhouses and trellis structures: Connecting and tensioning support wire in large-span heavy greenhouse frames, vineyard trellises and orchard protection nets.

5. Installation & Safety Guidelines

Important — Correct Orientation Is Critical

Correct installation direction is essential to prevent rope slippage and avoid loss of breaking strength.

  1. “Never saddle a dead horse” — do not place the U-bolt on the live line: The saddle must sit on the loaded (live) rope strand that carries tension. The U-bolt goes over the dead (tail) end. Never reverse or stagger clip orientation—placing the U-bolt on the live strand crushes the rope wires and seriously reduces safe working load.
  2. Clip quantity and spacing: For 3/8" (10 mm) wire rope, use at least 2 to 3 clips per rope eye (3 clips recommended for industrial or critical-load applications). Space clips at 6 to 7 rope diameters apart (approx. 60 mm / 2.25 to 2.5 inches).
  3. Re-tighten after first load: Wire rope stretches and its diameter reduces slightly on first loading. After the initial tension cycle, re-tighten all nuts with a wrench to maintain long-term safety.
